Colourful jewels fly over the meadows and fallow land, the sanctuary being a paradise for butterflies. More than 30 species are recorded, half of them being on the Red list of Salzburg, thus endangered.
Close to the water and along the ditches one can see other jewels of the air. Dragonflies are flying artists. The museum Haus der Natur in Salzburg lists 27 species of dragonflies in the nature sanctuary of Zeller See south shore and adjacent protected areas.
